Gluten Symptoms in Women

Most women have a daily diet of foods rich in gluten and as such they are likely to experience the symptoms associated with gluten sensitivity or the celiac disease.  Foodstuff containing wheat, barley, oats and rye are a rich source of gluten.  These grains are the staple foods of many people, a factor which has greatly increased the occurrence of gluten intolerance.  Gluten has a protein known as gliadin which people with this condition cannot absorb in the small intestines leading to a variety of bowel movement complications.  There are a number of gluten symptoms in women that they should be on the look-out for.


Gluten symptoms in women are not easy to diagnose and they take time to develop.  These symptoms maybe misread as a result of other disease or health conditions.  A woman experiencing spontaneous miscarriages or delivers underweight babies is likely to have the gluten sensitivity condition.  She may also experience inexplicable fatigue, joint, bone and muscle pain.


The damage of the small intestines will lead to bloating, gas and constipation.  Diarrhea may also occur following a meal with gluten rich cereals.  Gluten symptoms in women also include headaches, depression, low levels of concentration and dental problems.  Abnormal weight gain or loss which can easily be misdiagnosed as an eating disorder may actually be due to gluten intolerance or sensitivity.  Frequent abdominal pains, vaginal infection and urinary tract infections are some of the many symptoms of this condition.


Gluten sensitivity or gluten intolerance has been linked to some genetic or environmental factors.  Women with siblings or parents with a history of this condition are most likely to be diagnosed with it and as such they should do regular medical tests.  Researchers have found out that gluten sensitivity is likely to appear after a physical or psychological trauma.  The best way to manage this condition is to shun wheat and other grains that contain gluten.
